HSIE Connection – Stage 1 Geography

This virtual site study is designed for Stage 1 Geography and supports the outcome HS1-GEO-01. Students build their understanding of places and water environments by exploring how people use, value and care for them. They also use geographical information to help make sense of what they observe (NSW Education Standards Authority, 2024).

HS1-GEO-01:

describes ways people connect to and care for places, water environments and each other, using geographical information.

Key Geography Learning

Natural and human features

A key part of the learning is identifying natural and human features within a water environment and thinking about how these features influence the way a place is used.

Water environments

Students also explore how people connect with water environments and are introduced to the ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples value water Country and Place.

Maps and geographical observations

Maps, photographs and observations help students gather and interpret information about the area (NSW Education Standards Authority, 2024).

Learning Through a Real Local Landscape

Georges River Environmental Education Centre provides a meaningful setting for this learning because students can explore these ideas through a real local landscape. The Georges River, Chipping Norton Lake and the surrounding bushland, parkland and developed areas give students a range of features to investigate. The centre also supports fieldwork, outdoor exploration and practical learning connected to the local environment (Georges River Environmental Education Centre, 2025).

Through the virtual site study, students can begin to understand how water environments are used, why people may value them differently and why caring for these places matters.
