About the site

Georges River Environmental Education Centre is located in Chipping Norton in south-west Sydney, close to Chipping Norton Lake and the Georges River. This makes it a great place for students to learn outside the classroom and explore the environment around them. The site includes bushland, parklands, riverside areas and outdoor learning spaces, giving students lots of chances to observe different features of the local area (Georges River EEC, 2026).

What Students Can Explore

The centre also has a range of resources that support hands-on learning. Students can explore native plants, a frog pond and other parts of the surrounding environment. Inside, there are also native animals, scientific specimens and Aboriginal cultural materials that can help students build their understanding across different learning areas (Georges River EEC, 2026).

Why It Works for Stage 1 Geography

For Stage 1 Geography, this site works really well because students can investigate a water environment in a real setting. They can look closely at natural and human features, use simple maps and make observations about how the area is used. They can also think about how people connect to and value water environments and Country. The Stage 1 Water Environments program links to HS1-GEO-01 and gives students practical ways to build their geographical knowledge through exploring, observing and investigating (NSW Education Standards Authority, 2024; Water Environments Excursion, 2024).
