Explore the Site

Georges River Environmental Education Centre gives students the opportunity to explore a local landscape made up of different environments. With Chipping Norton Lake and the Georges River nearby, students can investigate bushland, open park areas, riverside spaces and places designed for outdoor learning. Accessible walking trails across the site also give students different ways to explore and observe the surrounding environment (Georges River EEC, 2026; Georges River Environmental Education Centre, 2025).

Exploring the Water Environment

Water is an important part of the local area and gives students a real setting to investigate geographical ideas. Students explore the Georges River and surrounding water environments while considering how waterways are used, why people value them and why caring for them matters (Water Environments Excursion, 2024).

Identifying Features of the Place

Students identify and compare natural and human features within the environment. Large- and small-scale picture maps help them investigate features of the river and other water bodies and understand how different features exist together within the same place (NSW Education Standards Authority, 2024; Water Environments Excursion, 2024).

Looking Closely at the Site

Photographs help students investigate the water, bushland, pathways and learning areas. Students can notice details, make observations and explain how different parts of the site may be used (NSW Education Standards Authority, 2024).

Look Closely

Questions such as “What do you notice?”, “Is this a natural or human feature?” and “How might people use this part of the environment?” can guide discussion and encourage students to use geographical language when sharing their ideas.

Exploring Water Habitats

Students can also explore habitats found within the water environment. The program gives students opportunities to investigate water-loving plants and animals and includes dip netting for small aquatic animals. These experiences allow students to look more closely at the living things found in the area and think about how they are connected to the environments around them (Water Environments Excursion, 2024).
